Alex: There are just some places out there; as soon as you hear about them they make you think “I bet that place is incredible”. As soon as Heather and I caught wind of Lulu’s Chocolate Bar off of MLK Jr Blvd in Savannah we knew we’d have to add it to our list of things we ought to do. Honestly, a place devoted solely to mixing drinking and that most venerable of sweet treats sounded almost too good to be true.
Fighting traffic and finding parking in that area was nightmarish on an early Saturday evening. Fortunately though, right when we were about to give up and drive home, a space opened up right in front of us. It was obvious that the universe wanted us to go to Lulu’s and enjoy an absurd amount of chocolate and alcohol.
The interior was dark and comfortable, and a glass dessert case dominated the entrance. We were led to our table near the back before we have a chance to drool too much on the display. I went with a cappuccino and Heather ordered a glass of red and we both drank and absorbed the atmosphere while we considered our choices.
Without a doubt, in a place like Lulu’s we’d both have to be getting a hedonistic level of chocolate in some form or another. The strawberry suspension cake sounded incredible, but so did their inside-out German chocolate cake. Naturally, we did what any normal dessert browser would do and ordered both. While we waited, I took a moment to consider my cappuccino. It had been the best cappuccino I’d had in Savannah thus far, but it was rough competition with some of the excellent coffee houses we have in Jacksonville.
When our dishes arrived, we were a bit surprised by the appearance. Both cakes had a very similar exterior; completely coated with chocolate. My German chocolate cake was excellent; a delicious blend of layered caramel-coconut filling and rich dark chocolate that was almost too much flavor to handle in one bite. I would tell you how much I had to suffer, eating that cake, but it would just be a lie so that I’d be able to have it all to myself.
Heather’s strawberry suspension cake was something else entirely. Where in my cake was layers of coconut and caramel, hers had a layer of fluffy mascarpone studded with sliced strawberries. Personally, I felt like her cake had a much better balance of flavors than my own, maybe because I particularly enjoy chocolate and strawberries. The fluff itself kept a bit of that berry flavor, which tasted amazing spread over chunks of the chocolate cake.
Soon we had to declare defeat; two slices of this magnitude were too much for us. Neither of us wanted to dive back into the traffic back to the house, so we took our time picking each individual strawberry out of Heather’s cake. Eventually though, all the strawberries were gone, and it was time to bid Lulu’s Chocolate Bar farewell. It was a great place to stop for a tasty pair of desserts, though next time I’d consider having at least an attempt at dinner before gorging on their chocolate treats again.
