Heather: Full disclosure - Sushi House in Mandarin is my favorite place for sushi. Since I no longer live in the area, I don’t visit nearly as much as I used to, but it’s still the top sushi place I’ll recommend to people. It is tucked away in a shopping strip on San Jose Blvd, and if you weren’t looking for it you’re likely to pass it.
After spending most of Saturday at the Mandarin Art Festival, I knew I had to stop in before heading home. The staff is always friendly, and the more often you visit, you’ll get to know them and they’ll know you. I ate here for the first time a few years ago with some friends who were regulars, and they talked with the waitress about what each of them had going on in their lives, and asked each other about specific family members. I love being able to make that kind of connection in a restaurant – you start to feel more like family than just a customer.
Sushi house always brings you a free appetizer of the chef’s choosing. Today was a fried veggie dish that had a nice blend of flavors to it.
I credit Sushi House for being the reason I am obsessed with sweet potatoes. Any restaurant we visit that has some form of them on the menu I will almost always order. Sushi House started this food trend for me, and no other sushi place in town beats their sweet potato roll. Every other sushi place that has a sweet potato roll either fries it too much, or presents it in an unappetizing way. There is the perfect amount of sweet potato and cream cheese in this roll, and it truly melts in your mouth. I could live off this delicious treat.
I also ordered the Jax Roll – which is a California roll + eel. When I was first getting into sushi, someone recommended eel, and at the time I was worried because eel just didn’t sound appetizing. I was so happy to be proven wrong, and it’s now my favorite fish to order with sushi. It is not a fish you eat raw, and the sauce it is prepared in gives it a slightly sweet tasty. If you haven’t had eel before, I’d recommend the Jax Roll as it blends a well known roll with the eel. The flavors are rich as Sushi House, and it was definitely a roll that left me feeling full.
I also ordered an avocado roll, as I adore avocados, but have never ordered a sushi roll with just avocado in it. I found it a good roll to eat between the other two so that my platte could break from the two distinct flavors of the other rolls. As much as I love avocados, I don’t think it will be a roll I order in the future, as I prefer the fruit to blend with other flavors.
Not only do you get a free appetizer at Sushi House, but they also bring you a free dessert. I enjoyed the fried cookie with whip cream, and ended the meal with the orange slices.
When you are paying your bill, you are likely to get some coupons to use on your next visit. So delicious sushi + kind staff + generous extras with your meal = no question my favorite place for sushi in Jacksonville.
